If it were just like a power up or something, I would say that it's promoting alcoholism. From what I've read though, it looks like a metaphor. He uses the alcohol to push past things (jumping and running faster) in a physical sense, but it's really just a metaphor for the emotional battles he's facing. That's why, the more he relies on the alcohol, the harder it gets to tell what's real and what isn't.
As far as power-up drugs go, meth would probably be the one to throw into a game. Not one like this, but perhaps one like Grand Theft Auto. Granted, it would be an awful thing to do, but if they could emphasize the down-sides of using it properly, it could be fun.
