Genesis vs Gamegear

I ordered Sonic 2 for Genesis but accidentally got it for Gamegear. And I used to love Gamegear. I think I'll look for a used one. But here's the thing. Aren't they basically the same thing? Same games practically. Is the size the only difference in consoles? I don't mind playing both, but is there a reason? Or are they slightly different...

Also sonic 2 is very common for genesis there's like 10 copies at my local retro place lol
