The Official Simpsons Appreciation Thread

Postby MikeNUFC » Jul 29th, '11, 16:12

Seems a shame there isn't an official thread for the greatest show ever made.

Basically, just talk about epsiodes, jokes, seasons etc.

Season 4 is my favourite season; just about the time they struck the perfect balance between comedy and emotion. Absolutely insane season. Lemon of Troy and Homer the Heretic are probably my favourite episodes ever. But there are so many classic episodes that that changes all the time.

One quote that's on my mind:

Marge: There's something different about Bart
Homer: New glasses?
Marge: He seems depressed
Homer: Probably misses his old glasses

Man, I adore Simpsons.

I've seen every episode 2-3 times. I was watching one today that said

Lisa: Mom, can my new friend spend the night?
Marge: Is her parents okay with it? They've never met us
Bart: Yeah, we could be murders
Homer: Yeah we could've been...but then we had kids :(

Just watched 'And Maggie Makes Three' - not watched it for ages and was reminded what a hilarious and emotional episode it is. The ending is beautiful. They don't make 'em like that any more.

The "do it for her" thing is brilliant, in that episode there's also a lot of laugh out loud parts, like when homer starts shooting the firegun.

From Kamp Krusty:

Kent Brockman (when visiting the camp mutiny): Ladies and gentlemen, I've been to Vietnam, Afghanistan, and Iraq, and I can say without hyperbole that this is a million times worse than all of them put together.

The new episodes are awful. Back in the day though, it was amazing.

Yep, it's gone downhill since series 8.

Series 10-13 are fucking horrible. Bar a few episodes those series are completely unwatchable; it still has elements of good humour but Mike Scully took the show from great characterisation, realistic plots and emotion and subtle social commentary and satire to nonsenical plots, cop-out endings ("surfs up") forced emotion and way-too-obvious satire, while the characterisation got unbelieably bad - Marge was annoyingly naggy, Homer was just a complete cunt, Bart wasn't funny and Lisa was too preachy.

From there it's hit and miss, but mostly miss.

I just checked the episodes list (haven't watched the show chronologically so i don't really know what episode belongs to what season) and there are about 5 episodes from seasons 10-13 i really didn't like, the only horrible/unwatchable episode i could find is "Saddlesore Galactica", the rest are good at the least

homer to mr. burns - "that's for employing me for 8 years." *burns a bridge behind him*
I guess I never caught that when I was younger.

Not to sound patronising, but I guess it comes down to how you've watched them. If you've grown up with the 'golden-era' episodes before watching any of the later stuff, you get caught up in the characterisation, stories and emotion. When it loses that realism and emotion, it becomes kind of unwatchable to me, because the characters all seem so unbelievable and it becomes more like a cartoon (lol).

The episodes from 10-13 have some decent humour but the plots and characterisation which, for me, were so vital in making the show great, were lost.
