How do i program my remote?

This probably doesnt belong in this topic, but its the closest probably. I got a new universal remote for my dvd player and my tv. I have NO idea how to program it, its really pissing me off. I know i have to hold a button down, but everytime i try holding down the DVD button on the remote it does absolutely nothing. I have all the codes for it, but no clue how to put em in. Help me PLEASE

depends on the type of remote you have i believe
for mine i believe i hold the ok+mute button until rest of the lights light up (cbl, tv etc)
and take it from there.

if you are really unsure take it to the place you bought it at or radioshack/bestbuy whatever you got and have them explain it to you.

i forgot myself, havent watched tv in ages
