I dropped a finish nailer on my toes today, and it hurt.

Who knows? Putting up trim is such a no brainer that it can't be bad.
But I do know that this fucker hurts when it combines forces with gravity

What kinda range do those things have? I always wanted to just fuck around with one for like a half hour

Um, "range"?
You press the head into the desired target (wood) and pull the trigger, nailing the wood in.
I've never manually pulled the head back and shot it into empty space because
A) The gun uses its own rear weight against the target for stability
B) Nails arent bullets, and won't act like a projectile
C) Finish nails are very expensive
Believe me, it wouldn't work like you're thinking.
