(11-04) 11:25 PST CONCORD -- An eighth-grader is recovering at Oakland Children's Hospital today after being stabbed in the heart by a classmate on Thursday.
Concord police Sgt. Darrell Graham said the boys were in class at Glenbrook Middle School when the victim, a 14-year-old, apparently was teasing the suspect, a 13-year-old. The two then got into an argument.
"The kid who is being taunted gets frustrated and takes a pair of big scissors and stabs him in the chest," Graham said.
The scissors nicked the victim's heart, and he remained in stable condition today. He is expected to recover.
About 20 pupils were in the class, and at least 12 of them witnessed the stabbing, Graham said. The substitute teacher leading the class evacuated the students to the principal's office, Graham said.
School and criminal records revealed no disciplinary problems involving either boy, Graham said. Police plan to interview the teacher who usually heads that class to see if the boys' dispute was an ongoing problem.
The 13-year-old was arrested on suspicion of felony assault with a deadly weapon and taken to juvenile hall.
