When G-Unit alum Tony Yayo performs Sunday at Chrome, he'll have Philly emcee and recent G-Unit label signee Mike Knox with him.
Knox's G-Unit debut is expected to drop in early 2006, but he's staying plenty busy in the meantime. He's got a new mixtape in the works with local promotional outfit Men On Fire, and he's about to issue a DVD, "Man On Fire," chronicling his career so far.
Along with performances, "it has different interviews on it and shows me at 50 Cent's house," he said.
There's a lot of curiosity on the Philly hip-hop scene about how Knox will do now that he's signed to arguably the most controversial label in rap, but he's not letting the pressure get to him.
"So much has changed for me," said Knox. "I don't have to prove myself to anybody."
"Knox will attack the game from all angles... he'll fit in great with G-Unit," said longtime local hip-hop power-broker Steve Brodie, who helped break artists such as Sean "Diddy" Combs, Lil' Kim and Biggie in the city. "Right now, Knox is a student of the game. He's been at it a long time."
But Knox's affiliation with G-Unit begs the question: Will he get involved in any war of words with rappers who are at odds with G-Unit?
"I ride for the team. Loyalty is everything," said Knox.
But he downplayed the whole beefs issue, saying, "Hip-hop has always been like that."
