KHABAROVSK, Russia - The Russian Far East city of Khabarovsk, in the path of a huge toxic spill from a Chinese plant explosion, has enough drinking water reserves to last more than 10 days, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported Thursday, citing Deputy Mayor Andrei Vologzhanin.

He said authorities would cut off the collection of water from the Amur River only in the case of a very high concentration of benzene and other chemicals once the slick hits the city.
The city's water reserves for industrial use are sufficient for just three days, ITAR-Tass reported. A spokeswoman for the Khabarovsk regional electricity utility, Natalya Prokofyeva, warned that energy facilities could suffer tremendously because the water quality necessary to run them is "much greater than the norm for drinking water," the RIA-Novosti news agency reported.
That could damage equipment and have an impact on the region's heating system, she said. Most central heating in Russia is generated from huge networks of hot water pipes snaking through cities, both below and above ground.
"The consequences of such damage at the height of winter would be catastrophic," Prokofyeva was quoted as saying.
