If we were on American Idol and we got to have a famous musician mentor us, Dr. Dre would definitely be a top choice. As part of the Fox reality show’s recent revamping, Interscope-Geffen-A&M chair Jimmy Iovine has joined the show as an in-house mentor. Iovine also happens to be BFF with Dr. Dre so Entertainment Weekly asked Dre yesterday, during his Beats By Dre showcase, if he would ever consider being part of Idol.
Dre’s response sort of sounds like a yes. “You know what? It all depends on the artist, if they turn me on or not,” Dr. Dre told the magazine. “That’s all there is to it. Of course, they have to have a serious talent. I have to be comfortable vibing with them in the studio. And I really like artists that have a story.”
He’s done a pretty good job shaping Eminem over the years, so some Idol contestant could get lucky. Meanwhile, Dre is still in the process of releasing his long-awaited new album, Detox. At the Beats event Rap-Up asked the artist when fans might expect that disc to drop. Dre said, “That’s a good question. In a perfect world, you know I’m really trying to make Christmas, but we’ll see.” He added, “Something will definitely be out.”
Iovine, who was also at the event, said, “I feel that if it comes down to it, Dre will move Christmas. We support him 1000 percent.”
