DJ Quik, a Los Angeles producer and rapper visiting Melbourne this week, is working on Dre’s much-anticipated, much-delayed album, Detox.
The album, Dre’s first release in 10 years, might never see the light of day.
“I don’t believe Dr Dre will release that album,” Quik said.
“I think he’s over it and rightfully so. He doesn’t have to prove to anybody that he can still make a hot record.”
Quik revealed Dr Dre has studied Chopin, Beethoven and Tchaikovsky to inspire tracks on Detox.
But Quik said working with Dre, whose solo hits and collaborations with NWA, Snoop Dogg and Eminem have sold 150 million records, is stressful.
“He’s a slave driver in the studio. He’ll make you cry,” Quik says. “You have to be perfect to work with him. If you not, you want be in the studio, period.
“He’s totally, totally, totally mean when it comes to production.
“He’ll work diligently on one part for hours upon hours upon hours, only to scrap it if he doesn’t feel it’s addictive enough.
“He almost a perfectionist to a fault.”
