My Official The Slim Shady LP Review.

I spent the whole day listening to this album, and I've come to the conclusion:

I definitely do not like it as much as I thought I did.

Sure, the album crafted Slim's major appearance in the hip-hop community, and I'm mighty grateful for it. But when I look back, it's not as great as I thought. Here's the full review:

"My Name Is" - 4.5/5: This track alone helped shoot Eminem's rise to fame. He made sure the audience knew who he was, with a beautiful delivery, incredible and hilarious rhymes, and of course, the oh so annoying, yet catchy ass hook. The hook is the only thing that ruins this track. Honestly, I think he could have come up with someone less -- "poppy". I realize he admitted this in a plethora of biographies but, let us continue to the next track.

"Brain Damage" - 4/5: This track shows off Eminem's beautiful storytelling abilities. But, I believe he should have gone a tad bit more serious on this track. I realize Eminem is the type of guy to turn his weaknesses into strengths, but, he should have made it more believable. Yeah, Eminem (at this time) is the cartoonish, funny, rapper. But, it just wasn't as fun on this track. C'mon Em, the principal of your school helping DeAngelo beat your ass? Weak. The hook definitely saves this track. NEXT!

"If I Had" - 5/5: Fucking. Masterpiece. It's funny how I hear people saying Slim is only complaining on this track. Hell yeah he's complaining, but who doesn't? The guy had a fucked up ass rough life, he wants to let that bullshit out and show how he truly feels. NEXT!

"'97 Bonnie & Clyde" - 4.7/5: This goddamn song -- if it weren't for this song, we might have never heard the masterpiece "Kim". Okay, I have to give this song a 4.7 out of 5 for that fact alone. I'm not really fond of the songs Eminem makes for his daughter(s). It's cool when he makes references to them in songs, but sometimes he overdoes it. Anyways, I enjoy this song. I enjoy listening to it. It's a great song, the guy's disposing his dead wife's body whilst baby-talking to his daughter, genius! The one thing that took away from the full 5, is.. wait for it.. is the plot! Again, this is another song that Eminem should have worked on the "believability", if that's even a word. NEXT!

"Role Model" - 4.9/5: 4.9 out of 5. You know why? "I strangle you to death then I choke you again/And break your fuckin' legs 'till your bones poke through your skin". THAT FUCKING LINE. I'm glad he didn't have a bunch of other dumb lines like that throughout the song. Why Slim?! WHYYYYYYY?!

"My Fault" - 2.3/5: This song is pointless. An obvious filler. I don't enjoy it one bit. I used to, I'll give it that. The whole shrooms story..? Don't like it at all. Should have gave that slut some Vicodin, Em.

"Cum on Everybody" - 1.9/5: The only reason I gave this song a 1.9 out of 5 is because of one line: "I told the doc I need a change in sickness/And gave a girl Herpes in exchange for Syphilis". That one line saved this otherwise boring track. Slim, stay away from the club tracks.. Don't even make me bring up "W.T.P.".

"Rock Bottom" - 5/5: Another masterpiece. I was hooked from the first few lines: "I feel like I'm walking a tight rope without a circus net/I'm popping Percocet, I'm a nervous wreck". How deep and serious can a rapper get? Better question, how emotional can a rapper get? Ask Eminem. The man goes DEEP, in this track. Grand Canyon deep! Don't believe me? Go listen to this track, NOW!

"Just Don't Give a Fuck" - 5.5: Whoa! Two masterpieces in a row! This track -- simply put -- showcases Eminem's (or should I say Slim Shady's) rhyming abilities, and his FUNNY HUMOR (not that dumb "Role Model" shit). The hook is so addictive, I'm literally spitting it at least every day. When I wake up, brush my teeth, walk to school, walk home, talk to people. Shit, I just wish Slim had the same attitude today.

"As The World Turns" - 3/5: Another storytelling track. One question Em, why would you do this to us? Why give us an amazing track like "Just Don't Give a Fuck", then make us blast this (not funny) record? That's like.. that's like.. like Em releasing The Eminem Show, and then releasing a shitty album like Encore! Oh.. wait. The only thing I like about this track is the third verse, and well, the hook. NEXT!

"I'm Shady" - 5/5: I can't rate this song anything lower than a 5. I'm sorry, TRShady. I let you all down. Shit, I really love this fucking song. I love the hook, his voice on this track, the content, the fucking title. I think I'm literally in love with this track. "While I blow my brain out/Just to see what it feels like". Twisted, yet hilarious humor. Love ya Slim!

"Still Don't Give a Fuck" - 5/5: The FANTASTIC continuation of "Just Don't Give a Fuck". Damn, I really love this song. The bars, the hook, his attitude, it all shows that he does not give a fuck. I can't say anything negative about this track.

Aight, I'm out! As you can clearly see, I didn't rate "Bad Meets Evil" because Royce is on that track and well, it's not a solo song. PEACE!

[Slim Fiasco]

Here's my review form an older thread. All I have to say about it, is in it:

The Slim Shady LP is my favorite album and also my pick for Em's best piece of work. One of the reasons is my belief that this is his most pure work in the way that he wasn't responding to any perceptions of his public image, and his creativity was unaffected. He was doing everything solely to please his own taste and was hungry to come up with something different, something that Hip-Hop hadn't witnessed yet, and something that he sure as hell succeeded to do so. The period prior to all this was also the most sincere so to speak of his life, as he was facing some real problems and was pretty much nothing more than a fan of the culture, as opposed to being the leading force of it. In conclusion, my first point is that the level of originality and the element of surprise were the biggest on his first release.

In relation, this is the album that has impressed me the most, especially on first listen. The reasons being:

1. His flow - straight ridiculous. He was fast but not double time, he was shouting but not yelling, he was speaking but yet flowing, he was angry and extra energetic but yet it all sounded effortless. And he did repeat this with the Marshall Mathers LP but this was the first time that he came through with such delivery so therefore it was more impressive. And also, I believe it's a delivery of his that is the hardest to pull off if you try it on your own. On that note, it was different than anything else which stood as a flow up to that point.

2. The rhyming - even more effortless than the flow and it was so distinctive. The ending multies of his lines were very noticeable but he still had plenty of internal ones that would slip under your radar. This was another extremely strong side of his that contributed to him being the most well-rounded rapper ever.

3. The humor - funniest album ever. And it wasn't just the lines themselves but the way he said them too. He could rap something simple like "Nan-a-boo, goo-goo ga-ga" and make you laugh your ass off. On top of that, there were all the back up vocals and effects which made it all more appealing. So considering humor is hard to achieve in rap, especially on such constant basis and on one singe LP, this makes it a big plus and something that the other two albums didn't have or at least not to that extent.

Outside all this but still in close connection, is the creativity and the perfection of the album. When I say perfection, I mean that it's the release of his that has the least (zero) whack verses, which is mostly due to the low number of guest appearances, and thankfully the lack of the idiotic Bizarre.

As for creativity and diversity just look at the songs:

a) Guilty Conscience - A great concept with Em and Dre playing the little shoulders sitting angel and devil. It was original and first of its kind (in music/Hip-Hop) as far as I know, and the introductions between the verses made it more film-a-like.

b) Brain Damage and As The World Turns - Great storytelling tracks that included excellent delivery and rhyming which makes them the best Eminem songs of that caliber. They were also very funny and the first one was even based on real life events that added a nice introspective touch to it.

c) '97 Bonnie & Clyde - The same conclusion as above can be made for this one too. Another plus is the amazing spoken-a-like delivery that was unheard of before, and the imaginary of the song is wonderful and extra lively as well.

d) My Fault - Same goes for this one too, though the rhyming on here wasn't as spectacular.

e) Role Model, Still Don't Give A Fuck - The two bomb songs of the album. Put the Eminem that rapped on these on a track with any other Eminem and he'll slaughter "him". Braggadocio rap at its finest, with superb delivery, rhyming and a perfect combination of seriousness and goofiness.

f) Rock Bottom, and to a lesser extent If I Had. The emotional songs of the album that still kept it raw and were corny-free. The first one is often considered the best track on the LP and one of his greatest in general. A great way to be introspective but still rhyme the shit out of the verses.

So to recap it, The Slim Shady LP is to me the most diverse and well rounded release of Shady's career, as well as the most original one which is why I consider it my favorite and the best from Em.

You don't know what dark humour is do you? The exaggeration is what makes the humour in this song so haunting. Using humour to mask serious issues is what this album is all about, You don't need to believe the plot to believe his anger and frustration, not to mention the satire. Subtlety flying right over your head.

The one thing that took away from the full 5, is.. wait for it.. is the plot! Again, this is another song that Eminem should have worked on the "believability", if that's even a word. NEXT!

I mean, really? Em has just crafted the sickest, most twisted love song for his daughter and you want more believability? Fucking hell. The whole point of this song is how he's flipped the whole concept of the sample. The plot isn't meant to be be belieavable - the love for his daughter is what is supposed to shine through. I realize you probably don't understand subtlety, and would rather listen to Mockingbird.

Erm, you've not given any reason as to why you rate this song so low. Not one.

It's not a club track. It's a parody of a club track. That's what makes the chorus and all the lines in it so funny. Again, you don't understand the song.

3rd verse? It only has two verses. It showcases Em's amazing detail to his rhyming and storytelling. Yet again, you've not given a reason for not liking it. Just a really fucking stupid comparison.
