I liked Relapse more than Recovery

Postby tadpole25 » Apr 15th, '12, 14:57

I think they are both great albums, but personally, I listen to Relapse much more. I also think it is an overall better album, for several reasons.

1. Production
Dre, probably the best producer in the game, and Eminem have a deep-rooted chemistry. I know Eminem wanted to branch out and try new instrumentals, but producers like Just Blaze, Boi-1-da, etc. gave him a bunch of cliche soft-rock beats with annoyingly synthetic drum loops.

2. Storytelling
Eminem is a gifted storyteller in his rhymes. In relapse, he painted a portrait of a horror story and when he wasn't doing that, he painted a portrait of his life in recluse. In Recovery, yes, there are 3-4 songs that do this, but the rest are just free-associative freestyles. They are random. And he relies way too much on puns and metaphors, that weren't really done much in hiphop until Lil Wayne came in. I like the concept of "Not Afraid" for example, but the first verse wasn't really that profound, it was just a random silly freestyle. "Going Through Changes" was an amazing song, I wish there were more songs like that on there.

3. Uniformity
Eminem sounds the same in each song in Recovery. The accents in Relapse were silly, but at least it let him change up his flow anytime he wanted to. It just feels like most tracks in Recovery were the same: Eminem shouting in monotone over a cliche soft-rock drumloop beat.
"I take yall diss as endearment - I love it when I hear it
Maybe words offensive - free speech I don't fear it
Maybe music can take us to a place so atmospheric
Beyond our greatest imagination, illuminatin' experience
If we open our ears and close our inhibitions, it's clear"

In some areas I think Relapse is better than Recovery...as far as storytelling, lyrical skill, and production goes I feel Relapse is ahead. But Recovery is a better collection of Eminem songs to me...it's actually pretty fucking solid front to back. It sounds more like an Eminem album than people give it credit for.

I like to switch between the two albums often. I love both for different reasons. I've been listening to Relapse quite heavily lately and tracks are growing on me again. It's just as an album, I feel Recovery is better than Relapse and is ultimately more important in his career. Relapse was more of a way for him to find his footing back in the rap game.

He has a totally different style of rapping on both of them so I guess it comes down to personal taste and what you look for in music. I liked Recovery better than relapse but I thought both albums were awesome!

Relapse was dope as fuck, idc what anyone says. I realize some of the content is a little iffy, & the accents too, but if you look at it from a technical aspect--it's flawless. Everything was on point on that album. The creativity of it in genius, & the flow & rhymes are insane--I don't know any other rapper that could make an album like that..
