Recovery (Eminem) - A Review by DevilsAdvocate and Forgot_About_Matt
To call Recovery a decent album is a very big understatement. Em is really back on top this time, after the ear-twitching accent on his last album Relapse. Fans can get comfortable with the accent after several listens, but it still feels cringe-inducing and overused. Other than that, Relapse is a lyrical masterpeice that fits every syllable perfectly in every bar and displays great efficiency in the rhyme scheme. On to Recovery:
1. "Cold Wind Blows" The album kicks in with Eminem showing his skills, displaying some crazy wordplay over a hard-hitting, bass-twitched Just Blaze beat rhyming and spitting lines like "I'll show you pussy footin' / I'll kick a bitch in the cunt 'til it makes her queef and sounds like a fuckin' whoopie cushion". Overall, this joint is the best start to an Eminem album since "White America" kicked off 2002's vibrant The Eminem Show.
9/10
2. "Talkin' 2 Myself" Over a DJ Khalil beat and featuring a soulful hook by Kobe, "Talkin' 2 Myself" is a major display of Eminem's honesty wiith an amazing flow and on-point lyrics. Em opens up about his canceled plans to diss Lil Wayne and Kanye West in lines like "Hatred was flowing through my veins / On the verge of going insane / I almost made a song dissing Lil Wayne / It's like I was jealous of him 'cause of the attention he was gettin' / I felt horrible about myself / He was spittin' and I wasn't / Anyone who was buzzin' back then could have got it / Almost went at Kanye, too / God, it feels like I'm goin' psychotic / Thank God I didn't do it / I would have had my ass handed to me". Don't take that last line too seriously. Em is a very modest person, but I feel he could have lyrically defeated Wayne and West, even in his drug-addled state.
8/10
3. "On Fire" Over a Mr. Porter beat (arguably the best on the album), Em attacks his critics, unleashing his anger through an impressive mashup of metaphors, similes, and wordplay the best English professer would have trouble comprehending.
10/10
4. "Won't Back Down" With a rock-inspired DJ Khalil beat and a hook by pop/rock artist P!NK, this angry track is delivered with a flow resembling a cokehead on Red Bull (in a good way). The song boasts lines such as "baby, what the deal? / we can chill / split a half a pill and a Happy Meal / fuck a stank slut / I'll cut my toes off and step on the receipt before I foot the bill / listen, garden tool, don't make me introduce you to my power tool / you know the fucking drill". Despite this, the joint feels messy and a bit forced.
7/10
5. "W.T.P" This track (title abbreviated from "White Trash Party") is a very catchy joint on which Em controls his flow to fit the Supa Dups-produced beat precisely. Eminem approaches club banger territory in this swag-rap jam where he informs the viewer of his importance through lyrics like "now, first of all, I'm a boss / I just wanna get that across / Man, even my dentist hates when I floss".
7/10
6. "Going Through Changes" Em samples Black Sabbath's "Changes" on this touching, heartfelt track where he opens up about his slain best friend Proof, his often frustrating fame, and how his daughters inspired him to become (and stay) sober.
9/10
7. "Not Afraid" "Not Afraid" was a good choice for the first single, as Em apologizes for his Relapse album a letdown (he calls it 'ehh") and makes listeners aware that he is "not afraid to take a stand" as he simultaneously reaches out to addicts and anyone facing struggles. Boi-1da's beat is weak, but Em saves it with some well-placed choir effects.
8/10
8. "Seduction" Boys, check your girlfriends, because Em might just steal them from you. "Homeboy, you better get a clue / She's on my dick 'cause I spit better than you / What you expect her to do? / How you expect her to act in the sack / When she's closing her eyes, fantasizing of digging her nails in my back to this track / seven disc CD changer in her car / And I'm in every single slot, and you're not, awww." Eminem uses an impressive double-time flow here as he switches from fast to slow rapping.
8/10
9. "No Love" This track features Lil Wayne, who performs well, though his irritating voice and boring flow may annoy listeners. As always, however, Em has the better verse here, spitting tough-guy rhymes like "I can see these people's ears perk up as I begin / To spaz with the pen, I'm a little bit sicker than most / Shit's fi'inna get thick again / They say the competition is stiff / But I get a hard dick from this shit, now stick it in." This very entertaining track samples the Haddaway classic "What is Love".
9/10
10. "Space Bound" An amazing track by Eminem. I am speechless.
10/10
11. "Cinderella Man" This highly energetic track has a feel similar to "Till I Collapse". Script Shepard killed the beat, giving it cool clap sounds and out-of-this-world drums that serve as a compliment to Eminem's amazing flow. "Who forms pyramids and raps circles around square lyrics? / Who? / Here's a clue / He came to the ball in his wifebeater / Lost his nike shoe / It's in ya ass, he's in ya ass /He's all up in ya psyche too."
9/10
12. "25 To Life" Em showcases an amazing artistic concept and a perfect flow in this joint over a mellow guitar beat from DJ Khalil. "Look at how I dress / Fucking baggy sweats / Go to work a mess / Always in a rush to get back to you / I ain't heard you yet / Not even once say you appreciate me/ I deserve respect /I've done my best to give you nothing less than perfectness."
10/10
13. "So Bad" In this fun, random track, Eminem states that he is an American dream and tells listeners about the origin of his infamous alter ego, Slim Shady over an instantly recognizable, west coast-inspired Dr. Dre beat.
8/10
14. "Almost Famous" "Almost Famous" is the album highlight and the best Eminem track in a very long time. DJ Khalil prouduced one hell of a beat with high-edged guitars and Em utilizes his classic angry delivery and lyrical genius. "Now there he goes, in Dre's studio/ Cupping his balls / Screaming the wood off the paneling / Cussing the paint off the walls / Spewing his hate to these haters / Showing no love for these broads / He ain't giving 'em shit, he scissor pinch a penny so hard."
10/10
15. "Love The Way You Lie" This Alex da Kid-produced track features a hook by Rihanna, and Em raps a (true?) story about a physically abusive relationship as he rhymes with a very emotional delivery. The best song I have ever heard on the subject of domestic violence.
8/10
16. "You're Never Over" Eminem didn't exactly do justice to Proof on this song. He can definitely craft better lyrics about his deceased D12 bother and lifelong best friend.
7/10
17. "Here We Go" "Havoc on the beat, I wreak it." Em displays killer rhymes with a relaxed flow on this hidden track produced by Havoc of Mobb Deep. "I don't gas my Mercedes at the pit, man / I treat it like a Mogwai / 'Cause it will turn into a Gremlin and run over kids, women and men / Vren-vren! / Motor's so big you can fit a midget in his engine."
8/10
Eminem is back with this fresh, amazing album. Thank you for reading this review, and be sure to pick up a copy of Recovery.
