Yeah I think I asked the wrong question once but listening to non rap music you definitely pay as much attention to them as you do rap songs right? I dunno why people think that non rap fans don't give a shit about lyrics or think that a kanye west fan only cares about the sonics and the lyrics.

NMH is probably one of the great wasted talents in the past decade or so, just imagine if they made more albums.

Yeah I still pay as much attention. I understand why people would think that but I think rap and non rap are very similar and that their fans listen to their music very similarly.

melody=flow
singing voice=delivery
and obviously lyrics are the same in both

and yeah I agree. Their first two albums are just so incredible I think they only would have gotten better with time. They left us with so little material.

I do think some people are onto something though, like that does apply to black metal (lesbireal if you can even hear the lyrics through the growling) they could be having lyrics about raping babies but it doesn't matter since they're just garnish on the main dish. Hell even shoegaze has lyrics but do most people care about My Bloody valentine lyrics? But other genres like Folk & shit most definitely lyrics are just as important, so yeah. Also I have a feeling most people have that notion that hip hop is the most lyrical genre is because we have more lyrics on average in a song that most other genres, lol.

So In The Aeroplane over the sea>Ok Computer eh?

Well yeah that's totally true. In some genres the voice is just another instrument adding to the overall sound and the lyrics aren't really important. Even within rap you care more about lyrics more in some contexts than ever. I listen to Freddie Gibbs because of his amazing voice and flow and yeah his lyrics are good but I'm not rly analyzing them or thinking about them much.

You're onto something but that most definitely rings true with cloud rap, trap rap, and industrial rap to an extent (Asap Rocky, Waka, Death Grips) and I think that this happening is actaully great and shows hip hop evolving. Most people that decry those subgenres are the same morons that probably shat on punk when it came out. Althought Freddie Gibbs is a great lyricist phaggot.

but yeah I agree about hip-hop evolving being a good thing. People that want to box it in and say what is and isn't hip-hop are morons (most yeezus haters) and expecting everything to be the stereotypical rap of the 90's is futile. Rock evolved so much that it's sub genres became genres of their own. Folk rock and death metal are about as similar as spoonfull and tech n9ne are when you think about it. and cloud rap is definitely a case of lyrics being completely meaningless. Yung Lean's music is awesome and I don't really give a shit about what he says.

so you don't find this any good?

I wanna like this and the guy's talented but I find it pretty boring even though I kinda dig his style, this whole boom bap revivalist style goin on now is complete shit and one of the worst things in the genre tbh. & this is someone who loves M9 one of the true blue "spitters" but idk I don't find him like utterly generic.

I still can't get into yung lean, I do have limits with how bad the rapping has to be lol.

It's hard to argue against Food & Liquor, The Cool, and all the mixtapes he released.

And you completely forgot about Kanye West. He released Late Registration and Graduation during that era. T.I also had an impressive run.

was for sure you were gonna pick Black Thought and even more surprised you mentioned Kanye, lol.

yeah this is better than ginseng strip and one of the most atmospheric songs I heard in a while almost reminds me of shoegaze with how mumbled and incomprehensible the lyrics are, I still wanna hate it tho cause I'm a hater at heart.

this has to be one of my favorite songs in a while though.

What era are we talking about?

Quantity should come into it, given that the quality is essentially the same (F&L, Lemons, Game Theory, Below The Heavens et. etc.)

ummm, in no order, these are my favourite albums from that time period.

Lemons
The Balancing Act
Doomtree
Below the Heavens
The Undisputed Truth
The Old Prince
Game Theory
Donuts
Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor
When This Is Over
Audition
Late Registration
Be
A Piece of Strange
You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having
The Mouse and the Mask

--

slug's got 2, and so does shad. slug also has all the eps he released over that time (the 4 seasons and s leakage)

i still need to give rising down a few good listens, as i've heard good things. also need to check out lil wayne. and, tbh, i'm not the biggest lupe fan

lemons
below the heavens
game theory
late registration
balancing act

are the best five albums from that era for me tho.

the weedcarriers don't even bother me anymore and add to the whole militant atmosphere of it (although Peedi Peedi still sucks). Just imagine if it was dominated by Black Thought more, the dopeness would destroy the earth... 75 Bars>*

The whole point of this thread though rather than compare dope ass mcs from that time period (well why I asked the question anyway) was to see if Lil Wayne was a top 5 rapper during his run. I needa relisten to BTH though. he was just so insanely prolific was killing guest verses, and hooks (don't forget hooks). He was just so unique and different in every song that it's crazy, he's up and down as an artist (like kool keith) and even his classics I don't consider flawless but I could probably a compilation of straight 10/10 lil wayne songs that all sound like they were made by a different rapper.
