I guess this album would be their yeezus except a looooooot worse, lol. With how rushed and I guess they were goin for something left field and more experimental but just completely failing. & they made Phrenology which was a great avant garde rap album, whilst remaining poppy.

This album is definitely ?uestlove's brainchild rather than Black Thought's

In fairness, this album has being coming, The Roots have being gettin' more and more "conceptual" since Rising Down, with Black Thought being featured less and less on every album since then

My main problem is, none of the tracks really go anywhere, and the hooks are hideous for the most part. Also, I could hardly sit through Black Rock after Black Milk creamed that sample years ago!
It's a huge disappointment, but The Roots were bound to drop a dud sometime

On a side note, BT dropped arguably the verse of the year and possibly his best since Game Theory on Rapid Eye Movement with Monch, I'd love if he went solo after this album, tbh. 6 verses from him on a Roots album is a fuckin' sin
Same sword they knight you they gon' good night you with
Sh.., Thats' only half if they like you
That ain't even the half what they might do
Don't believe me, ask Michael
See Martin, see Malcolm
You see Biggie, see Pac, see success and its outcome
See Jesus, see Judas; see Caesar, see Brutus
See success is like suicide
Suicide, it's a suicide
If you succeed, prepare to be crucified

I dunno why the hell they do that since BT is one of the best mcs all time they give so little mic time and would rather give the spotlight to weedcarriers, it's like imagine SSLP or MMLP with D12 running amok and just shitting all over stan or something. Though I still say that some posse cut songs work well like Criminal & Singing Man and wouldn't be as effective with just BT, otherwise yeah. Also agreed don't forget his verse in Bird's Eye View and in Black Milk's album last year, which really makes his subpar verses here a matter of lack of effort rather than him not being capable. (I still don't think any verse he dropped post 2010 can really fuck with like False Media, 75 Bars, Rising Down verse, etc) but still.

Exactly man, focusing more on the hooks, guests and production for most rappers or even groups is understandable, but not when you've got an emcee as talented (and still able to rip tracks apart) as Black Thought

Oh yeah, I definitely agree, even though I'm not a big Dice Raw or Greg Porn fan, in the last few Roots albums they've been used well, but not one track on here has more than one BT verse, dafuq?!?

Plus his verse on Rae's album a few years back, Saigon's album, ha as you say, it's lack of effort more than anything on his part, which is the main reason I'd love to see him drop that solo (its a fuckin' shame that Dangerous Thoughts album never came out :shakehead: )

While I'd love one too we're well past his GT-Rising Down days, he could still probably make a pretty good album out of it. But something tells me he'd still have someone horrendous singing his hooks, when he has a pretty great hook game himself. Seriously his hooks in GT were the best ones (Here I come, Game Theory, Can't Stop This) & he's not a bad singer either.

An 06-08 Black Thought solo produced largely by dilla yet having Mos Def, Kweli, Erykha Badu, Common etc features would be dope af.

The Roots have a nas like disco for me in that it's Game Theory that's undoubtedly one than everything else fights for second place. Rising Down has grown on me a lot lately and feels like a nice companion piece to GT but on principle I can't rank it second since the roots are known for switching up their style every other album. I'd like to put Illadelph second cause it just has seems like a time capsule of the roots during that era & since it has No Alibi & Universe at War, but it can be a drag listening to that album front to back and honestly post 00 roots are a lot easier to listen to for me. Phrenology has the seed 2.0 which might be their best song dunno.

It's just amazing how unremarkable and boring this album is. Honestly what was the point of it? It only had 6 songs with rapping (Black Thought getting only 1 verse on each song lol) and accomplished absolutely nothing. It was so terrible and average it's appalling. 2.5

I'd probably give it around that score to, maybe a 2. I streamed it twice and just turned it off the second time midway through since despite being extremely short & anticlimactic it's long and dragged out af.

Also which of these three songs do you think are the best this should help you choose whether to listen to TFA, Illadelph, or Phrenology next (whenever you get around to it)

Dynamite! is also a favorite of mine from Things Fall Apart, that Jay Dee magic.

What's crazy is how different they all sound from each other and they all follow each other chronologically. So it's not like comparing do you want more to GT or anything. I'd also nominate Ain't sayin nothing new that beat is so fucking great.
