ummm, in no order, these are my favourite albums from that time period.

Lemons
The Balancing Act
Doomtree
Below the Heavens
The Undisputed Truth
The Old Prince
Game Theory
Donuts
Lupe Fiasco's Food & Liquor
When This Is Over
Audition
Late Registration
Be
A Piece of Strange
You Can't Imagine How Much Fun We're Having
The Mouse and the Mask

--

slug's got 2, and so does shad. slug also has all the eps he released over that time (the 4 seasons and s leakage)

i still need to give rising down a few good listens, as i've heard good things. also need to check out lil wayne. and, tbh, i'm not the biggest lupe fan

lemons
below the heavens
game theory
late registration
balancing act

are the best five albums from that era for me tho.

the weedcarriers don't even bother me anymore and add to the whole militant atmosphere of it (although Peedi Peedi still sucks). Just imagine if it was dominated by Black Thought more, the dopeness would destroy the earth... 75 Bars>*

The whole point of this thread though rather than compare dope ass mcs from that time period (well why I asked the question anyway) was to see if Lil Wayne was a top 5 rapper during his run. I needa relisten to BTH though. he was just so insanely prolific was killing guest verses, and hooks (don't forget hooks). He was just so unique and different in every song that it's crazy, he's up and down as an artist (like kool keith) and even his classics I don't consider flawless but I could probably a compilation of straight 10/10 lil wayne songs that all sound like they were made by a different rapper.

I can't stop replaying that song with Edan, that had to be like verse of the year for that album (Edan ofc). I still needa get around to the rest of the album but it does seem like something I'd like more than BTH tbh. Flylo, Madlib, & Edan production.

Maybe it's his voice but I always thought he came close to ruining Long Time and for the longest time (heh) would skip over it because of that now I never skip tracks in GT. But yeah, I kinda like Dice Raw but mostly cause of his voice. As a lyricist he's alright, Malik B's verses in the title track & In The Music are great though. Best guest verse has to be Truck North in Bread & Butter imo though, he mighta even outrapped BT in that song (and black thought came correct in it).

I always do wonder if Game Theorywould have improved if it had like a high profile guest or two in place of Dice Raw or whatever like Mos Def, Kanye, or Kweli. & that album's pretty much perfect to me (well almost). Malik B's verses are great though (& I felt like he was the prince po to BT in earlier roots albums)

Mos Def>Eminem>BT (surprising isn't it, but BT sounds the least like a freestyle and sounds more like a song. Though it might have the least wow factor since I pretty much overplayed Doin it again and it's pretty much just that song, lol). I do think that BT @ the time was probably the best rapper out of all those three though so it doesn't mean much.

BT's freestyle reminds me of Weezy's second verse in "Best rapper alive", and seriously that verse is great and also a prime example of weezy being super minimalist and being able to paint a scene with just the bare essentials

I actually like Eminem's freestyle, it wasn't cringey at all. Thoughts on that weezy song though or more importantly verse? Seriously being able to pretty much paint a scene with nothing but verbs like that is crazy.

mos > bt > em

mos is great always and just one of those rare personalities/voices where he always sounds awesome and you could never mistake him for somebody else.

bt was good, thought the verse fit well so not sure about dead prez' criticism

eminem's style is just so unappealing to me at this point lol i didn't like his verse at all other than the can't wait to nail ya bar but him just rhyming to rhyme doesn't do it for me and his flow/delivery is pretty bad

I'm pretty sure Mos Def used that freestyle in another song so my criticsm is a largely personal one and me being a Black Thought stan, lmao. & I dunno him rhyming to rhyme kinda what makes it sound the most freestylish to me if that makes any sense. & I liked his "If I add another inch to it you would swear" line. I thought his delivery was fine here wasn't a stupid accent or recovery voice, but I guess he still has his trademark style in it.

Mos Def & Black Thought verses are both from songs they did previously. Also nobody else listed in the title should be compared with Lil Wayne.
