How many 40 year-old rappers could still put out "creative" albums?

Em succeeds with a bunch of songs but always fails to make a complete album, Relapse was his chance to make a classic but he wasn't "there" yet so some songs from that era sound strange and let's not forget that the accent kept a lot of people from giving it a 2nd listen.

Jay changed, he changed his style drastically to fit in with the new generation. Production helped him a lot to get the attention he wants but his raps been wack af for like 6 years now (but of course he still managed to make some good stuff every now and then).

Raekwon could still rap his ass off but like it or not, it's been repetitive for a while now.

Nas sounds tired, Life Is Good was decent though.

Redman still nice as fuck with the flow and everything but like Rae, his raps aren't anything we haven't heard.

I could keep going, and if you put this into perspective, Em probably the only one still making noise when he releases something worth it (Rap God, Forever and Airplanes features).

So yeah, it's time for rappers to face facts (like Em did on GoF). I'm not saying they're incapable, i'm just saying that they'll probably take 3 years for each project and that's too much. I actually applaud Kanye for forcing himself to put out as much albums as he can without sacrificing the quality of his projects (the quality that he is comfortable with of course).

This. They (specifically MMLP2), are good. Really good. But they feel more so like a compilation or a mixtape then anything. It doesn't really feel like an ..album? If that makes sense? Hell, even Recovery was more consistent and cohesive than MMLP2. As I said in the unpopular opinions thread, Relapse was the was album where Eminem had majority control. And it's fantastic. From the background (Dre and Em would be in separate rooms, right next to each other, and one would make beats and the other would write and record raps, then they would come together. Hell even Beautiful was co-produced by the Bass Brothers. When was the last time you heard an album as 'Eminem sounding' as Relapse?! Encore thats what. Recovery was so left field that it yielded plenty criticism and was even shunned by some fans. MMLP2, while fantastic, lacks plenty of that Eminem element (aside from Resto). No classic paul or steve berman skits, absolutely no Dre contribution, a few Eminem contributions but thats it. I guarantee ever since the relapse backlash, he's been scared into a corner, afraid to do what he REALLY wants to do. Paul and Interscope have turned him into a damn puppet and he's a very passive person so he will just go along with what they say. Not to mention that he has a ton of yes-men. And that is often toxic for artists. I guarentee that if Eminem had Relapse-like creative control, there would be no rihanna, very little female hooks, no-popish production (The Monster, Asshole, BP, and to a lesser extent, Rap God), no ADK, More Dre, production like the songs I mentioned before hand, and GoF would be absent or not as prominent, and Skits. Everything like that. At 41, Marshall can still pump out fire, but since his comeback (with the exception of Relapse), he has yet to make a true, complete Eminem album. Just my opinion. I think he should work with Cardiak more often.

Note: I do dig BP and GoF's production, but I'm just talking in a sense of making a complete eminem-ish album.

There's plenty of thriving artists who are 40+. As far as I'm concerned MMLP2 is Em's best work to date. Tech N9ne's 42 and puts out something new and creative every single year for the last decade, and he's done over 2000 shows in the last 15 years. R.A. The Rugged Man is still a beast and Busta Rhymes is still fully capable of keeping his head above water with todays elite, and his career has been notably consistent from day one. Same can be said for Scarface. So I don't think there's any reason for A3k to put up the mic, he still has a lot in him.

I think 3K's unwillingness to continue on with music, stems from some serious insecurities. He can make any excuse he wants, but i feel it has a alot more to do with him internally, more so than him feeling any type of way about age in Hip Hop music.

To date yes. My long post was just backing up @Revolutionarys first part of his post about Eminem
