He was one of the "kings" (lol) at rhyming and flow though, especially for his time. So fucking smooth.
This. I think it's just because Big L started doing some of the more clever ones (at the time, lol). People quote "Ask Beavis, I get nothing Butthead" all the time, for example. That would get a moderate reaction from a modern rap battle crowd these days, since the bar's just been raised so much higher now.
I'd say the best at punchlines these days might be Charron, honestly. He's mastered the art.
Oh, and I think Big L was the first one to combine those kinds of punchlines with smooth multis (which a lot of punchline rappers can't even master today), so the punchlines hit way harder than his contemporaries and everyone was blown away by his style at the time.
