Lupe Fiasco is the greatest lyricist ever

Postby Rattle1 » May 20th, '14, 23:05

I have not heard a rapper with this much talent and knowledge, so conscious of the world he lives in and with such a determination to positively influence people who listen to his music. But what blows me away about this guy is his unbelievable lyrical ability and wordplays. Some of his songs are history lessons better than anything you'll find in a textbook, and others are metaphorical masterpieces that the average person won't understand without an analytical breakdown.

Of Course a lot of mcees are legit lyrical mcees:

- Nas has quotable and paints lyrical pictures better than any other mcee
- Eminem is a legit lyrical MC in terms of how he structures bars, delivers great cadence to enhance these rhymes
- Common
- Kendrick & Tupac have statement of fact lines, lines that make you think, beautiful writing
- Jay-Z is probably the most quotable rapper ever
- Ab Soul has punchlines and amazing wordplays
- Lil Wayne in his prime had punchlines for days
- Budden has bars for days

Nas will always be my favorite mcee but Lupe FIasco can do it all, he's all these rappers combined

agree/disagree ?

I think there are better mcees than him but hes most definitely one, if not the, best lyricist in hip hop history

People have different definitions of what lyricism means... for this reason, you can see a lot of people saying Eminem isn't lyrical, or Tupac isn't lyrical but I have never seen anybody denying Lupe's skills. He has mastered the art of every aspect of lyricism and I can't think of any other rapper that has an ability which can even contest his... maybe Black Thought :-k

Edit: Ras Kass is also a good contender, on Soul On Ice he had some amazing lyrics

As a pure lyricist he's up there as a rapper though I find quite a few more entertaining, and honestly his style doesn't really do much for me anymore. It's almost too verbose and yeah it's cool & all but I'd take something like wayne's hyper minimalism and the way he can describe scenes with fragmented phrases that's unrivaled by most.

"Millimeters! red dot find the spot!
Head shot!
Body drop!
Two fingers I'm out!
Gunslinger Hollygrove! Fireman, kinda hot!"

or even better "Nigga that steel on, red beam safety y'all
Murder scene tape it off, red rum, tomato sauce"

Other lyricists I prefer Vordul Mega on the cold Vein, MF DOOM, & Ghostface killah. Doseone in for hero for fool is also a great lyricist but his style is pretty offputting for most (I like it though)

Lupe's early shit is fucking ill.

A lot of people love shitting on Eminem & a lot of other mcees because we all have different definitions of what lyricism means.. a lot of people seem to think that eminem (2010-now) rhymes for the sake of it on a lot of songs.

yeah I agree with you :y:

Ghost is highly underrated. I stopped listening to him a few years ago but from what I can remember, He was a great story teller, he could pull off quite a few things and always kept it lyrical.

"Impossible" is probably one of the best emotional story-telling tracks EVER :flutter:

Shakey Dog is probably the most visual storytelling song ever, he has the perfect voice & his slang rly adds to the stories.

Adding to the thread this probably one the best displays of lyricism ever, honestly everything about it is perfect (other than being a bit short) the symbolism, the paralleling George Bush to a street thug, everything and that's not even getting to his immaculate flow.

04-08 Black Thought is lowkey the best rapper alive

:y:

Another great lyricist imo is K-Rino, that guy has displayed pretty much everything lyrically.

oh man I love you, that song is beautiful lol

It isn't about word association or puzzles or complexity for the sake of it. You have to be saying something and say it well and False Media is one of the best examples of it

Yeah it is, gotdamn. I really wish it was a bit longer though other than it it's pretty much the perfect hip hop song. I should note that I have no problems with complexity and having layered verses with multiple meanings that takes a lot time to dissect, plenty of people could be great at that. What's goin on now is prty much the punk rock manifesto vs prog rock manifesto. Complexity vs simplicity, both can be prty shit or rly great.

Failure is probably lupe's most lyrically complex song though, and it's bananas.

can't disagree with that, but complexity for the sake of it sucks (rhymes, etc), specially when you ain't saying shit :coffee:

but if you're rapping like Rakim or Eminem on SSLP/MMLP then it's just beautiful Image
