With a new Tupac Shakur based musical set to preview at New York’s Palace Theatre tomorrow (June 2), three songs from the Broadway show have been leaked as a preview for fans. Holler If Ya Hear Me will premiere officially on June 19.
The song’s released include renditions of “Holler If Ya Hear Me” and “California Love.”
The song to which the play owes its title was a single and the first song featured on Tupac’s second album Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z.
Holler If Ya Hear Me is inspired by Tupac’s lyrics but serves as a non-biographical narrative about two friends living in the inner-city in the Midwest. The production was written by playwright Todd Kreidler and features support from the late rapper’s mother Afeni Shakur as one of the musical’s producers.
The play stars slam poet, musician, and actor Saul Williams. The production is directed by Kenny Leon who also directed Denzel Washington in the current Broadway iteration of A Raisin in the Sun.
The Holler If Ya Hear Me version of “Holler If Ya Hear Me” is available for streaming on HipHopDX here. The play’s version of “California Love” can be found here.
