360 - utopia

Postby Pixel » Jun 26th, '14, 18:05

Now i don't know if there are many Australian users on this site, but if there are, then have you heard 360's new album 'Utopia' i have and think it's an absolute massive step up from flying and falling in literally every way, i didnt think FAF was that great, thought it was okay, but i think this album is absolutely fantastic and just what aussie hip hop needed, if you have listened to it what did you think?? Just curious...

My brother is a fan of 360 and he said he enjoyed the album. I haven't listened to it, but from what I heard from my brother it still has some poppy beats and crappy hooks. He did say that it is less commercial than falling and flying, though.

I really like 'Sixavelli', but it has some dodgy and random punchlines.

It has tracks with poppy beats and poppy hooks, but also has a lot without them, and on the tracks that he does have that pop sound, he backs it up with some damn solid rapping, which is surprising cos i thought hes lyricism was really weak in FAF, hes delivery and flow has improved by miles too,
Sixavelli was one of my least fav tracks tbh, i mean that line about having a hard on at your best friends funeral! Seriously?

I really didn't enjoy it from an introspective perspective. Tracks like Eddie Jones and Purple Waterfall are some of the best turn up songs I've ever heard out of Australia. If you can honestly say this album has any worthwhile emotional tracks, I'm not going argue with you, but come on.

Still Rap and Sixavelli are still some of the dopest aussie Hip Hop songs I've ever heard.

(btw in no way am I a Hip Hop purist by any means lol, I've got an EP dropping soon that's almost dominated by trap-ish beats, and one that actually features Miracle from Eddie Jones)

I just felt like it was a little bit of let down.

Fair enough, i thought the emotional tracks on this were pretty good, i don't understand what isn't about them, and i think 'early warnings' is extremely dope, gave me shivers when i listened to it, but i think i mostly like this album for 360's experimentation as an artist, lyrically he tries so many diff styles and pulls pretty much all of them off perfectly, purple waterfall and spiral down are my two fav tracks btw
Oh and i also like sixavellis beat and i loved the hook, and lunar c did good too, but whenever 360 tries to do that shock value style of rapping it always just comes off as kind of forced and painfully awkward for me to listen to, thats just me though

It's a step down from Falling and Flying and WYSIWYG, but at least he tried to do different stuff delivery-wise.

The lame thing about the album is it's exactly what you'd expect, content-wise. You expect 360 to rap about how fame sucks once he's become famous, knowing he's a huge Eminem fan, who did exactly the same thing. He's a great writer, but he seems to have no problem with spouting out cliche after cliche.

His first verse of Still Rap is dope. His delivery on Sixavelli is completely flat/boring, and Lunar C sucks on that song...his punching in sounds awful. Early Warnings might be his best song, though...everything comes together so naturally.

Fair enough

Lol i dont know what you mean about the subject matter, he only had a few songs where he talked on fame and when he did he kept it pretty middle of the road, as in he doesnt say that it sucks, he said there are good and bad things to it, i think you're just hearing him say that because thats what you expected so much, the album actually covered a few topics,

Well, The Price of Fame is basically "fame is not all it's cracked up to be," which is exactly the route you'd expect him to take. I wouldn't mind if he approached the topic well like Eminem does in Say Goodbye Hollywood, but he doesn't. It's a really generic pop song with only 28 rap lines where he doesn't really explore anything in depth or say anything in an interesting way.

He actually writes well about it on Justice's song The Fight of My Life. That's much better than The Price of Fame, writing-wise.

The other topics (religion is bad/homophobia is bad etc.) are executed in a pretty generic way. He's rhyming decently on It's All About To End, but the things he's saying are so unbelievably cliched it's hard to ignore.

I thought that what he was talking about with the whole spending your money wisely and not partying all the time was somewhat different, i dont think ive ever heard a rapper really say that before,
Also i agree that that particular song is pretty generic, along with live it up, but i think most of the other songs have creativity to them, not always topic wise, sometimes its musically, or rap technique wise, but what i like about this album is that it feels like every song has something. Different to offer from the last so it keeps me interested from start to finish...

I see a lot more aussie hip hop being talked about on here atm.

I've only given the whole album one spin but very familar with Price of Fame, Live It Up and Sixavelli. I think Sixavelli is the best track for me so far. There's a lot of throwaway tracks, Impossible would have to be the worst.

I was a massive fan of falling and flying even before it dropped (like half the album had already come out gradually before it dropped) and for a while after but some of the stuff from his first album/mixtapes is his best stuff imo. I admire that he's not afraid to try different styles where in Australia it's almost frowned upon to be anything but purist (changed a lot over the last few years though) with people like Allday and Seth Sentry coming up.

Got to meet him a couple of times and got pictures which was cool, he's a nice dude. Seen him live a whole bunch of times too.

I just don't think the writing on this album is good at all. Certain tracks have gold in them but it's not very consistent imo. The production is unique to the Australian sound and interesting to hear though. I hope it grows on me.

I just want him and Pez to make a boom bap Forthwrite album. There forthwrite stuff was funny as fuck and to me his writing was better back then.....almost funny to think now that he used to be seen as Pez's hypeman.

TrueWiz, got anything of yours we can hear?
