The Pulitzer Prize Committee today awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Rhyme to Eminem and Rihanna for their duet, ‘Love The Way You Lie.’
The single chronicles the decline of a relationship in rhyming couplets which Columbia University Emeritus Professor of English Dr Thomas Waring describes as “utterly original and compelling.”
Waring expanded on the decision at a press convention following the controversial Prize announcement, in which he described 2010 as a “poignant year in lyrical and poetic English.”
“Don’t play the blame game,” Waring told media, “We name names with no shame, and if you don’t take our hand, you won’t understand. ‘Love The Way You Lie’ is a literary tour de force, from its very chorus ‘Watch me cry / way you lie,’ and onto other highly innovative rhyming pairs such as fight / right, yesterday / day, as well as walk/talk and liar / fire. All of these within one song? Wow.”
“The Pulitzer Committee has never been more convinced that Marshall Mathers III is a modern-day bard,” Waring went on to say. “Shakespeare has nothing on this guy. Eminem used to write unpredictable, authentic and integral rhyme – I’m so glad he’s moved on from all that.”
However, judges noted that competition from other wordsmiths was extremely tough. “In Black Box, Stan Walker rhymes down /around in the very first quatrain, and he really impressed a lot of people with ocean / emotion.”
Walker was named Runner Up, beating out Miley Cyrus for ‘Everything’s gonna be okay / Party in the USA,’ and Florence & The Machine for the single ‘You’ve Got The Love,’ which features the original rhyme, “Hands in the air / just don’t care.”
Eminem and Rihanna are continuing a rich literary legacy – past winners of the Pulitzer Prize have included Ernest Hemmingway, William Faulkner and Ke$ha.
Interviewed at the exclusive after party, Dane Rumble expressed disappointment that the song ‘Always Be Here’ did not see him pass the nomination stage. “Bro, I rhymed down / town / ground / sound within, like, one stanza, but it just wasn’t enough. I need to fight for my right. Please, I’m on my knees. I’m crying, I’m dying, I’m trying, I’m sighing.”
Lady Gaga was also disappointed that ‘Bad Romance’ failed to win, despite rhyming ‘baby’ with ‘crazy.’ “The Pulitzer Board has made the wrong decision – it’s tearing me apart, it’s breaking my heart.”
What a bad award the best lyricist in hip hop could win, they gave him an award for the lamest rhymes in LTWYL,i mean a 10 year old can EASILY think of that, and this made me and cringe "Eminem used to write unpredictable, authentic and integral rhyme – I’m so glad he’s moved on from all that" he wrote like this for this song only on the album, plus IMO the song hand incredible lyrics and rhyming in such louis lane/so insane and going great/so ashamed like/wind pipe/fight/inflight hate/suffocate/resutate
