Advice on Overlays please?

Postby °[~CHR!$~]° » May 18th, '09, 12:26

...well i got following problem..my overlays sounds way to seperated from the acapella..like when i pan them to the right they "only" on the right....it would sound much smoother when its panned to the right and left at the same time and somehow connected to the acapella....know what i mean?
how could i manage to do this?...any help :flower:

just place the same overlay track down twice. pan one to the right, pan the other to the left.

Lol that's a really shit way to do it, cause it does the same shit as a single overlay not panned at all. Record 2 separate overlays pan one to the right and one to the left. Chop em up and shit to make them on the exact same timing and that's about it, there's not much to it. It's simple.

what i actually do is. what i said

paste the overlay down twice, but then i take the second one, zoom in really far and move it slightly off from the other one and then pan them, gives the 'surrounding' feel you spoke of.

Yes but that way isn't the best way, plus its being lazy. Lazy bastard.

what u could do as well chris, is use a stereo effect which wont really pan them but just make them seem wider.. so they feel like they're more wide and the main vocals are dead center... if u want more details on how to do this im me on msn...

simply copying one vocal twice and panning one to the left and one to the right basically does the same thing recording one copy and keeping the pan the same..

the best thing to do for overlays (overdubbs). is to make one main recording...and try your hardest to match the overlays perfectly to your voice.. (every change u make to your voice as your spitting the line. this will do a couple of things...first it won't make it sound so mechanical.. since it's not the SAME exact voice..it gives it a little variable which makes it more noticeable to the listener. Second, it gives depth to your voice...you won't sound as monotone..There are alot of people on this site who could use serious help with overlays because after all..overlays in recording are just as important as the actual verse itself.

so yeah..record your verse.. EX)
I'm drivin down the street, smashing the gas
past all you bitches on the freeway fast.

the italics is what you would record ONE overlay on (the whole bar)..as close to the original as possible.
the bold is where u would put 2. so essentially; u wanna record the bar first...overlay it once..and then on the second part of each bar(usually the rhyming part)..do another overlay with more emotion..
so each bar is gonna have a total of 3 overlays..the original..the overlay..and the overdubb (the final rhyming part of ur scheme)..MAKE SURE YOU ONLY OVERDUBB ON THE LAST PART OF YOUR RHYMING VERSE. OTHERWISE YOU'LL HAVE 3 VOCALS THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE TRACK..It sounds better if the whole thing was done with 2 vocals..and the 3rd is used as an exclamation to finish off the rhymes. if u need any help clearing this up..send me a PM. I've been recording music for almost 10 years now and I'll think you agree I have a really polished delivery...let me know if u need some help.

also:
I made a track that I purposely did the overdubbs OFF pitch and in different tones..so I could use it as an example for this situation exactly :-P

in these verses I did 3 vocals..and sometimes I'd have 4 vocals...u can tell in the verses when I would stop overlaying..and thats what u need to pay attention to...because if I kept the same pitch on each overlay it'd sound flawless.

no plug either: I just want u to visually hear when the overdubbs are used
http://www.imeem.com/people/_8pTENx/mus ... -like-you/

A common misconception about recording is that u can do a verse in one take....when recording a song for many people to listen to...you wanna make sure that you punch in at least every 2 bars if not then every 4 bars...and then practice spitting it together...EVERY recording artist uses punch in's regularly it doesn't matter if they're country, rock, or rap...whenever u feel like your breathing is too much and u have to take a breath..you should punch in..it will make you're delivery increase like this----> :y: :y: :y: :y: :y: :y: :y: :y: :y: :y: :y: :y: :y: :y: :y: :y: :y: :y: . I'mma look out for u chris..so u better impress me with ur next track with some of this advice!! :tounge2: :b:

punching in is for pussies, if you can't spit the verse all at once then you shouldnt have written something beyond your abilities.

what happens when it's time to put on a show?
