Starting Off...

Ok, I know this has probably been asked a million times, but I couldn't find anything so I apologise if there's another topic out there.

I'm interested in starting to try out the producing game. I know it will take me tons and tons of practice to even be decent, and I know it doesn't come easily and will take quite a while.

What I'm wondering is, what is the best program to start out with? I know Fruity Loops is the most popular, but it seems like it would be very hard for a beginner. Are there any easier ones to start out with, to get a hang of it with? Also, does anyone have any tips for a beginner or anything.
