Picture Uploading/Changing Avatar Picture

Whenever I wanna change my avatar, it doesn't let me. I go to google & I get the URL but it always says file link is too long, or when I upload it from my computer, the page just automatically switches out to a different site. Can somebody tell me why this is happening. (if you have the answer of course)
