There's been kind of a debate of which album is better, & most agree that TES is superior to the MMLP. I beg to differ, but that's just me. What about y'all? What do y'all prefer?

it seems like everyone here thinks TES, but i think that as a whole the MMLP takes it. I can listen to that album straight through any day.

The Marshall Mathers LP as art (creatively, conceptually and as a discussion piece).

The Eminem Show as an alum (musically, lyrically and as a coherent production).

But ultimately they're far too different, for me at least to say which is 'better'. Which is why I had to define it in that way.

The Marshall Mathers LP is a piece of reactionary art, at its best. And by far his greatest accomplishment as an artist. In terms of, a complete piece - with an aim and execution.

But The Eminem Show is a better album. Just in terms of pure music. He was a better songwriter, the songs are written better - Better hooks, better lyrics, and better execution in every department. It's just that its aim was introspection so by definition it's not as compelling or creative.

But again, that wasn't its aim so it shouldn't be compared in that way anyway.

A more... relatable comparison I think would be The Slim Shady LP vs. The Marshall Mathers LP. They're built of the same DNA. Only difference is MMLP is a more noteworthy and coherent album due to the fact it was a reaction. It was literally art imitating life, in real-time and commenting on itself as it was imitating it - And letting all those who could see the imitation(s) in on the joke, to laugh along at the morons too stupid to understand it, yet still protest it with such arrogance, like they have a right to not be offended. Him embodying every criticism not only thrown at him but at the youth of America etc. etc. - And for that reason, it meant more and you could feel that it meant more.

Which is why it's so powerful. And why it ethers any hip-hop album (artistically) that's ever come before it and probably will ever come, for a long long time.

It's a political, self-aware, tongue-in-cheek, madhouse, fucking... Masterpiece lmao. The Eminem Show isn't that but I'd still call it a better album. It's still musically better, I'd still call it a favorite over MMLP, but say it's not as important or noteworthy.

I'll conclude by saying...

-If I had to try and prove to somebody why Eminem was, in my opinion - A lyrical and artistic genius, I would use The Marshall Mathers LP.

- If I had to prove why he was a true musician of our generation that isn't just a foul-mouthed button-pusher and is more than just a lyricist, I'd use The Eminem Show.

MMLP is better but TES is my personal favorite. I never skip a track on TES, and MMLP has tracks like Remember Me that I skip sometimes

Personally, I like most TES. However, I cannot ignore that in MMLP he delivered two of his greatest songs of all time (in my opinion): The Way I Am and Marshal Matters.

As far as amazing, genius songs: MMLP has Kim and Criminal... TES has S4TM and TIC.

As far as rhyming goes... gotta give it to TES.

Though he still rhymes like crazy on MMLP when he wants to (Amityville, Criminal, Bitch Please II, Drug Ballad).

MMLP is hurt by the number of features. TES is hurt by two or three weak tracks.

Don't MMLP & TES both have five songs with features on them?
