Yes, it was Adam Levine.

I can see some of the stuff in the article being true. Like for 'Record', ESOM was a favorite to win, so most likely it was in second place after "Need You Now" (placing LTWYL in third). And I think Em really did get second for AOTY.

Writing about all this just pissed me off again. Em doesn't have much time left in his career, give him what he deserves already! It's times like these when I wish the fans decided the Grammy winners. Judging from the Yahoo and Fuse fan ballots, Gaga would have won AOTY and music video, but Em would have won every other category he was nominated in. Hate to say it, but VMASftw. I also just realized "Crack a Bottle" has a Grammy and LTWYL doesn't.

A rap song has never won for record or song of the year. This year, it seemed like that might change: Eminem's "Love the Way You Lie," featuring Rihanna, was up in both categories, while Jay-Z's anthem with Alicia Keys, "Empire State of Mind," and B.o.B's "Nothin' on You" featuring Bruno Mars, were both up for record of the year.

Instead of picking one of those hits, the Grammys — voted on by artists, executives, technical professionals and other industry insiders — instead went with "Need You Now," the mellow ballad from country's crossover trio, Lady Antebellum. The Academy also shunned "(Expletive) You" by Cee Lo Green, a retro groove sung by the former Goodie Mobb member.


A rare triumph for hip-hop outside the rap categories came in 2001, when Dr. Dre walked away with producer of the year. But that was also the year that the album he produced — Eminem's groundbreaking "The Marshall Mathers LP" — lost to Steely Dan in an upset that may only rival Jethro Tull's much-derided win in the hard rock/heavy metal category.

"The high points are spectacular, but there's a lot of sketchiness. Also, the Grammy voters skew old and white and have a problem acknowledging hip-hop."

As Aaron points out that in the past decade, rappers like Lil Wayne and Eminem lost out on the top prize to veteran rock acts like Robert Plant and Alison Krauss and Steely Dan, respectively. The project had all the ingredients to win big: a comeback story, big sales, chart-toppers, etc. But compared to past hip-hop albums that took home Album of the Year (Lauryn Hill's The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and Outkast's Speakerboxxx/The Love Below), Recovery might have been "too hip-hop," according to Vibe Editor in Chief Jermaine Hall. Those efforts stretched the boundaries of rap music in a way that satiates Grammy voters.

"Outkast winning Album of the Year makes more sense for them, because it lives in several genres," Hall explained.

"It's an uphill battle for a hip-hop album to win Album of the Year," Rolling Stone senior writer Brian Hiatt explained. "It was a really strong comeback, but I think there's still a resistance to Eminem specifically and maybe, to a certain extent, hip-hop in general in the overall voting group in the academy."

In a way, Eminem should treasure the fact that he didn't win, which means he's still dangerous," Hiatt said.
