Amadeo should be a vet, solely for this.

It literally reminded me of something prime-em would write.

It's definitely one of the most universally loved songs.

I would say its the second best em song. Stan is my all time favourite em song and my favourite song ever written.

I would say (and no offense to you) thinking music is entirely subjective is naive. If that were the case music wouldn't have evolved. There is a reason rap went from no multi's to multi's being the standard. What happened was the progression of the genre on objective building blocks. Rappers discovered people liked the repetition of sound and use became more widespread.

I have more to say but class is starting.. :P

You implied the song being personal and touching his daughter were elements that made it great. I disagree. With those standards most refrigerator notes could qualify as higher art. I'm just reiterating it's okay to subjectively like something and objectively criticize it. Multi's aside, there are plenty of factors that prevent the song from being good.

We'll have to agree to disagree. Most of those things are subjective... He's rapping about a tired subject one dimensionally with unimpressive lyrics. Just because it's touching doesn't mean it's good.

As for the subject matter... subject matter is important but it all comes down to the execution. Let's say a rapper wants to make a song about dumping his wife's body in the ocean while rapping to his child in baby talk. A lot of things going on there, and it's certainly interesting.. BUT the idea of it alone doesn't mean shit. It's the end result.

Right, I'm just saying the concept/subject matter alone isn't what makes it good, it's the execution. And I'm also defending Amadeo because it's important to analyze like he does, it's how the art form builds and progresses. If we accept mediocrity we will continue to get it.

With that said, I do think that the forum in general could do a better job of analyzing literary devices besides rhyme. It's rare for someone to comment on an apt metaphor or point out an interesting phrase.. but I'm assuming that's partially due to the music (so SICK, OF THIS SHIT, THIT, I MAY AS WELL WIPE...). It would be interesting to see the Sadistik/Lupe/Eyedea fans clash with fans of the super technical stuff.. maybe one day.

I think Block used to clash with Amadeo/EminemInsider when it came to analysing songs. (I may be wrong).

- What do you mean by presentation and substance?

- Do you think Mockingbird is well written?

- I wish I didn't use 'technical'.

Opinion is still the same. Walk This Way was a song that changed music. Not saying Lose Yourself didn't but Walk This Way combined Rock and Rap together in a while that has never been done before.
