Concept and execution are different things. The concept is that fame has come between him and his family and that when he dies be wants his daughter to be happy not sad. Both completely unoriginal concepts.

I think the execution of the song is pretty bad also, as it relies heavily on the video to make any fucking sense. Songs like Kim, Stan, As The World Turns, Murder Murder etc. have a very cinematic feel. You can picture exactly what's going on from what he is saying. When I'm Gone relies far too much on the video for that.

Oh, yeah, I'm not saying the song is good in any way, shape, or form. I'm just saying that, if executed better, this could've been a good "farewell" song.

Really overrated song, BUT it was unbelievable hearing it live during his Reading performance. But i guess that had to do with the hook and the nostalgic value.
