Ab Soul - these days

Postby Pixel » Jun 26th, '14, 18:15

What did you guys think of 'these days'?
Personally i liked where he went instrumentally, it was all over the place and i loved that,
But i think ab held back lyrically,
Also what did you think of the kendrick interval
I thought it was the best song on the album, but still didnt think it was as good as ab souls outro on section 80 tbh....
Also what did you think of that 20 fuckin minute battle at the end, i thought it was dope as hell!!
Surprised there hasnt been a thread for this already...

I agree mostly with schoolboy and jay rock,
But i think ab is definitely more then capable of holding his own as an artist, longterm mentality and control system were both extremely interesting albums that approached social issue in a very interesting way, and sometimes, like the rap battle at the end of this album,
Abs pure lyrical skill is just outstanding...

I'm pretty sure there's a youtube video of one of those dudes performing kendrick's songs on stage (without the latter there with him) can't remember which, but he must break you off good to do something like that.

Honestly i have no idea about it, could be ab, or q or even jay, but i just pay attention to the music they release, rather then focus on things like that,
But i do understand where you're coming from though and i do think each one of them is leeching off of kendricks success a little more then they should, but that doesnt automatically make any of them bad artists

what is a weed carrier?

what D12 is to Eminem, what Young Money was to lil wayne for a while, what Porn, Dice Raw, Truck North etc. are to Black Thought, G unit to 50 cent, Diplomats to Camron etc. Granted it's not AS extreme as they actually have fans outside of their "leader", but just lol at anyone thinking anyone besides kendrick is gonna blow up from that crew.

& because it was a let down to many people who were expect a worthy follow up to GKMC don't expect big numbers next time around unless he really gets some buzz going, hell it took around 2 years for Kendrick himself to go platinum. He's not lil wayne, drake or eminem level famous but he has the potential to be. Not to mention with groups like this there usually can only be one who gets mega famous and it's obvious who that's gonna be.

If performing one of Kdot's songs on stage without the latter there with them isn't a weedcarrier than I dunno what is.

Jay Rock is really the only one you could say is a weed carrier. Schoolboy is signed to a major label and has a #1 album and Ab-Soul has too distinctive of a style
You think your personal attacks make up for what you lack?

Em was performing Dre's songs back in the day too without Dre being there. Does that make him a weed carrier ? I know that it's not exactly the same case since Dre is more like an influence rather than a co-worker, still, I don't think that any of them are weed carriers since around 2011 they were all in the same position.

Not denying that they benefited from his success atleast a lil bit

Well that was a terrible example, lol. You know damn well there's a difference so there was no point bringing that up, it'd be like J cole performing a Jay z song out of respect before getting signed or (hypothetically speaking) one of TDE performs a Nas, Jay z, Eminem etc. song. They're supposed to be on the same level, I highly doubt Kendrick is gonna perform any of their songs (maybe if they keep doing that and he feels the need to do it out of respect) for sheer will. It'd be like Kendrick performing a Drake song on stage, you know what almost exactly like that except that they ain't affiliated but the latter is a lot more popular.

Perhaps weedcarrier is way too strong seeing as they've made their own careers and have their own buzz way more than most of those other rappers (barring Juelz Santana and I guess maybe lloyd banks) but otherwise they're highly in Kendrick's shadow and owe a sizable portion of their fanbase towards him whereas the opposite isn't true. It wouldn't be so bad (like I get it Kendrick is the most popular whatever) if he wasn't better than them in just about every aspect and they get A LOT (not gonna guesstimate how much) of their buzz by being affiliated with him. If they don't step out of his shadow soon they're doomed to be the next wale or xv or something.
