My favourite rapper, who I therefore consider the 'best' of all time, is none other than Shad. I've listened to many rappers over the years, but none seem to stand out more to me as much as he does; in my opinion he's the total package. Is he perfect? No, but neither is anyone else. If anything, he embraces imperfections and turns it into something unique and refreshing from a musical perspective.

His approach to the genre is also something that is very unique; Shad can switch from serious subject matter to humorous bars with ease, and he does both incredibly well. With some rappers you're either going to get one or the other, so it's nice to see someone capable of pulling off both at a high level. Speaking of pulling things off, I also think that Shad is something that a lot of others rappers aren't: 100% Corn-proof. He just isn't capable of coming off as corny, and I think this is down to how comfortable he is as a person, as well as how willing he is to show his true self in his work. It's strange to relate tongue in cheek content with sincerity... There's a level of sincerity in everything he does, which is rare to find. What you see (or hear rather) is what you get.

I hold all four of his albums in high regard, and again as I've already touched on, they are diverse in their moods and subject matter, whilst maintaining a level of cohesion. There's a poetic brilliance displayed on each of these projects, which is why I think the spoken word interludes and verses from featured artists don't feel out of place. His reflective lyrics are superb. His pop culture references are funny and occasionally are combined with a personal twist. If he has to be concise to convey what he wants to get across, he isn't afraid to deliver succinctly. On the flip side, he can paint pictures with words with ease, and bring a level of depth and creativeness that just isn't done enough in the genre. The imagery at times can be hard hitting.

From a technical standpoint, I put him up here with anyone. Double time? He can do it well and with a high level of clarity. Multisyllabic rhyming? With ease and never forced. Same goes for metaphors and similes when utilised. His flow never gets boring, and he mixes it up well, sounding natural and comfortable in the process. He's also very musically inclined; evident from his ability to play guitar and rap simultaneously, as well as being involved in the production process of some of his songs.

Taking everything into account, there is nobody I respect and enjoy listening to more in Hip Hop than Shad.

Best Rapper to me obviously is Eminem like I expect most people here. His run from 99 to 02 is an absolute once in a lifetime run and I am not sure will ever be reached and matched again. Continued on with great albums in the latter half of his career. Other than Em though I would say at the peak of their powers Nas and Andre 3000 are the two closest to Em. Illmatic is probably my second favorite hip hop album besides MMLP along with all the other great albums Nas has made. Andre is arguably the most original MC of all time and always brought in any Kast album including top 10 albums in ATLiens and Aquemini. Those three to me are the pinnacle of what hip hop can be and what every artist should strive for.
